Lessons Learnt

Almost 25 years of working in recruitment with leaders, boards, and executive’s its taught me one thing:

Rejection -and sometimes complete silence – is simply part of the journey.

Whether you’re pursuing an executive leadership role or your first board appointment or next career step, it’s easy to take a “no” personally. Especially when you’ve invested hours into an application, interview process, or networking conversation.

The reality is that many appointment decisions come down to factors completely outside your control:

• A board seeking a very specific skill set at a particular point in time
• An internal candidate already in the wings
• A shift in organisational priorities
• The need for diversity of thought, experience, or governance backgrounds around the table

None of these diminishes your capability or value.

The leaders and directors who ultimately succeed are rarely those who never experience rejection. They’re the ones who continue showing up despite it.

They keep learning.
They keep building relationships.
They keep investing in themselves.
And they keep putting their hand up for opportunities.

Every application, conversation, and interview helps refine your story and clarify where you can add value.

If you’re currently navigating a board search or executive transition and haven’t received the outcome you hoped for, keep going.

The right opportunity often arrives after the one that didn’t.

Persistence, resilience, and self-belief remain some of the most important leadership qualities you’ll ever develop.

Keep showing up, keep learning, and keep putting your hand up.

If you’re exploring a board pathway, seeking your next executive opportunity, or simply looking for an independent perspective on your career journey, I’d welcome a conversation.
