This month, we’ve invited members of our community—both past and recent placements—to share their personal journeys in a short blog post. For Be Executive, we asked candidates to reflect on their paths to senior leadership, the twists and turns along the way, the lessons they’ve learned, and the advice they’d pass on. We hope their insights will inspire and support you as you move forward into 2025.
By Senior Leader in Social and Community Housing
I’ve often been asked how I found my way into a leadership role in social housing. My journey has been shaped by a few pivotal experiences—beginning in Property Management and eventually leading me to the mission-driven work I do today.
Stepping into the Industry
My first role in the property sector was as an Assistant Property Manager. At the time, I was eager to learn and keen to absorb knowledge from those around me. Fortunately, I landed under the wing of an exceptional boss who not only taught me the ins and outs of property management but also modelled leadership qualities I still value today—integrity, empathy, and a commitment to professional development. The supportive culture in that office left a lasting impression.
The Lure of Higher Pay
Eventually, I moved on to a job where the pay was noticeably better. While it looked promising on paper, I soon realised that no amount of salary can compensate for a workplace with poor leadership. The culture was riddled with mismanagement and a lack of transparency. Although difficult, this experience was eye-opening—seeing how a lack of clear direction can erode team morale and productivity taught me that genuine leadership must be modelled consistently from the top down.
Government Service and Growth
After that tough stint, I pivoted to a role in government, where I stayed for seven years. This period turned out to be instrumental in broadening my understanding of policy, regulation, and the wider social housing landscape. Working within a structured environment allowed me to hone my organisational skills while witnessing how decisions at a higher level affect everyday practice on the ground.
Finding Purpose in Community Housing
Today, I’m proud to work in community housing—a space that marries my property management background with my desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. The culture here is supportive and values-driven, filled with colleagues who are passionate about social impact. Our organisation’s mission to provide safe, affordable housing aligns perfectly with my own commitment to community wellbeing.
Every day, I see how our work transforms lives—providing stability for individuals and families, and creating lasting change in the communities we serve.
Advice for Aspiring Leaders and My Younger Self
- Seek Out Great Mentors: I can’t overstate how invaluable it was to have a supportive boss early in my career. Look for leaders who are genuinely invested in helping you grow—leaders who understand that mentorship is a two-way relationship.
- Don’t Chase Money Alone: While fair compensation is important, it should never be the sole factor driving your decisions. Culture, leadership quality, and a shared sense of purpose are crucial to long-term career satisfaction.
- Embrace Challenges: Difficult experiences, like working in environments lacking leadership, can be catalysts for personal growth. They teach you what works and, importantly, what doesn’t.
- Gain Broad Experience: My time in government exposed me to policy, regulation, and strategic thinking—all essential elements of leading in the social housing sector. Seize opportunities that deepen your knowledge and broaden your perspective.
- Stay Mission-Focused: In community housing—and the broader not-for-profit sector—passion for the cause can truly unite a team. Keep the end goal in mind: to provide dignified living solutions for those who need it most.
Reflecting on my career, I’m grateful for every twist and turn—each role played a part in shaping me into the leader I am today. If you’re considering a path in community housing or leadership within the not-for-profit sector, know that it’s both challenging and deeply rewarding. With the right blend of mentorship, perseverance, and passion, you’ll find a space where you can make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
